Intervertebral Disc Disease in Dogs
Intervertebral disc disease or IVDD is a condition where the cushiony disc that lies between 2 spinal vertebrae bulges or ruptures. This can happen in 2 ways, compression or concussion. Compression is caused by physical pressure on the spinal cord which leads to slow degeneration of the nerves and diminishing function. Concussion is caused by a sudden trauma and effects can be seen immediately.
First signs of IVDD can be pain, weakness in the legs, or the “drunken sailor” gait. The more severe the damage the more profound this symptom can be. If left untreated motor function can be lost and the dog cannot walk.
Treatment in less severe cases can be cage rest and anti-inflammatory therapy. If weakness occurs suddenly and gets progressively worse or does not improve, advanced imaging (CT Scan or Myelogram) and possible decompressing surgery would be advised.
